In today’s fast-paced world, where stress and anxiety seem to be constants in our lives, the importance of mental health has never been clearer. According to NHS England, one in 4 adults and one in 10 children experience mental illness. In the United States, the statistics are equally concerning, with 1 in 5 adults reporting that they experience mental illness. Shockingly, more than 12 million individuals have grappled with serious thoughts of suicide. These staggering numbers highlight the urgent need for mental health support and services.
To address this growing need, startups have emerged as innovative solution providers, often focusing on telehealth solutions. Moldova, in particular, has seen a rise in startups dedicated to improving digital health services, with an increasing emphasis on mental health. In this article, we delve into three remarkable mental health startups, including two from Moldova and one from Estonia, all contributing to the global effort to improve emotional health.

Notably, SelfTalk secured 150,000 EUR in funding from Moldovan and Ukrainian business angels based in the UK in 2022, further underscoring their dedication to making emotional well-being accessible.
Respiro: Accessible Psychological Assistance
Respiro, another Moldovan startup, is led by Ana Niculăeș and is on a mission to empower mental health professionals to establish private practices. Their online marketplace connects clients with psychologists and psychotherapists, addressing a wide range of mental health concerns.
Recent studies have shown that just as humanity grasped the importance of physical hygiene a century ago, investing in mental and emotional hygiene enhances the quality of life. Respiro’s platform is accessible to clients worldwide, offering verified specialists, a convenient online payment system, and a commitment to confidentiality.
Triumf Health: Building Resilience in Children
Triumf Health, led by Dr. Kadri Haljas, focuses on children’s mental health. Research has consistently shown that building resilience from a young age can help prevent future mental health challenges. Their flagship product, Triumfland Saga, is a groundbreaking mobile game designed to promote mental health and socioemotional learning among children.
What sets Triumfland Saga apart is its evidence-based approach, ensuring that the game not only captivates young players but also delivers effective mental health interventions. The game is co-designed with children and is available in nine languages, ensuring accessibility to a broad spectrum of young players aged 7-12. Beyond serving as a game for mental health promotion, it also acts as a pioneering research tool, enabling continuous assessment of children’s mental states.
Triumf Health’s presence in Moldova is particularly noteworthy. The Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) is collaborating with Startup Moldova to bring a program to Moldovan schools. Teachers from 10 schools will be guided through the complex process of fostering a positive mindset and promoting mental health in the classroom using Triumfland Saga. This initiative aims to teach teachers how to leverage technology to enhance well-being while providing them with strategies to help teenagers and pupils navigate various mental health issues.
Furthermore, all schools participating in the ESTDEV Project will have the opportunity to engage in a creative local hackathon, with the winner’s receiving prizes and the rest of the schools gaining free access to Triumfland Saga for the remainder of the school year.
💚In a world where mental health support is needed more than ever, these startups are leading the charge by making resources accessible and effective. They are paving the way for a future where emotional well-being takes center stage, backed by evidence-based solutions, technology, and a commitment to making a positive impact on people’s lives.
